Applying for U.S. Citizenship

If you have lived in the U.S. as a permanent resident for 4 years and 9 months (or 2 years and 9 months if you received your Green Card through marriage to a U.S. citizen), you can apply for U.S. citizenship.

At the time of application, you must have been physically present in the U.S. for more than half of the last 5 years, and each time you traveled abroad, you must have returned to the U.S. within 6 months.

English Language Ability

Many people are not applying for citizenship or are failing the citizenship test due to English language difficulties. There are many inquiries about whether interpreters are allowed during the interview. You can bring an interpreter if you meet the following conditions:

- You are 50 years or older and have maintained permanent resident status for at least 20 years; or

- You are 55 years or older and have maintained permanent resident status for at least 15 years.

In these two cases, you can bring an interpreter to your citizenship interview.
